Travel Budgets in Tokyo

Post by Au Weng Kay » Fri Jul 15, 2016 11:18 pm

Travel Budgets in Tokyo

We always get queries from members regarding how much $ is required while travelling in Japan. The amount needed varies by individuals, depending on how frugal the person is (food, accommodation), the places he's going to (entrance fees) and what he buys (souvenirs, miscellaneous). This article will attempt to provide an estimates of such spending.
I split the spending into 4 categories >> Budget, Average, High and Luxurious spenders. A person can be Budget when it comes to accommodation but luxurious for food ! No problem with that. Also, this article is written with Tokyo in mind, but will apply to other cities across Japan as the cost of living is not too different across the country.

FOOD

1. Breakfast

A) Budget Spenders (Less than 200 Yen) B) Average Spenders (200-500 Yen) C) High Spenders (500-2,000 Yen) D) Luxurious Spenders (>2,000 Yen) You will notice that there are not many breakfast choices, especially Japanese food. Reason being, most Japanese office workers had breakfast at home (rice + miso soup + simple dishes like cooked salmon, eggs) rather than eating outside.

2. Lunch

A) Budget Spenders (Less than 500 Yen) B) Average Spenders (500-1,000 Yen) C) High Spenders (1,000-10,000 Yen) D) Luxurious Spenders (Above 10,000 Yen) Lunch set is generally cheaper compared to dinner sets in restaurants, even though the food can be quite similar.

3. Dinner

A) Budget Spenders (Less than 500 Yen)
  • Rice Balls : 権米衛 Omusubi Gonbei 100-200 Yen each http://www.omusubi-gonbei.com/menu/
  • Udon : つるまる Maru 250-500 Yen http://www.tsuru-maru.jp/
  • Bento Sets : Supermarket/Basement of Departmental Stores 200-800 Yen. Sample of what you can get. Ido Yokado. http://mcha-jp.com/3772
(Note : Most supermarket will start offering discount on food items after 20:00 hours, as much as 50% discount, to clear their stock)
B) Average Spenders (500-2000 Yen) C) High Spenders (2,000-10,000 Yen) D) Luxurious Spenders (>10,000 Yen) Note : For ease of classification, I tagged noodles, sushi as lunch and beef, rice sets as dinner.

ACCOMMODATION

A) Budget Spenders (Less than 3,000 Yen per person per night) B) Average Spenders (3,000-8,000 Yen per person per night) C) High Spenders (8,000-15,000 Yen per person per night) D) Luxury Spenders (>15,000 Yen per person per night)
