This forum exists due to the popularity of our Facebook group, which recently it's proven time and time again the lack of ability to expand and administer the group with any amount of efficiency. We have grown to a size where it's often difficult to scroll through the large volume of posts and comments daily, and even the search function is extremely limited and results unreliable. As volunteer administrators we would like to provide a safe, welcoming, and most importantly, informative place for people who love travelling all over Japan as much as we do. With these forums up and running, we will be more strict with the rules on our Facebook Group. Both will be running concurrently, as Facebook has a much larger audience, but these forums can be a far more useful tool for everyone.

Now the list of rules below may seem extensive at first but most of it is the forum's set limitations and about being a nice person, which we're sure all our valuable members are. Many rules are very simple, and cater to people who maybe new to how forums work. We understand sometimes there may be extenuating circumstances, so don't hesitate to contact an administrator or moderator to discussion the situation.

Basic Rules
  • Treat other members with the respect they deserve. This should go without saying, but treat others like you would like to be treated !
  • Insulting and flaming or personal attacks against anyone will be not tolerated. If there is a problem, PM an admin or moderator.
  • The abuse of PM and harassment of any member will be dealt with severely. If necessary, we will block the offender's IP or a larger IP range.
  • The forum language is English and Japanese only! Please do not use any other languages in any of the currently available forums. If you feel more comfortable in another language, let us know. If the admins feel there's sufficient demand, we may consider setting up a forum for speakers of that language.
  • The forum is about Japan, when talking about currency, you must post either directly in yen or at least add the yen equivalent to any currency you write down. If your post or comment is only in a foreign currency (including USD), that post or comment may end up being deleted.
  • Please be considerate in language you use on the forum, some of our members are younger than others. Try to keep vulgarity to a minimum. We understand the occasional human urge to use colourful language so rather than turning on the word censor, we'd just rather ban the tactless individual.
  • Please do not post inappropriate material. The policy goes that if you would not feel comfortable viewing it at work, or in front of children or parents, don't post it.
  • Please stay away from political posts. One of the reasons to have a forum outside of Facebook is because expats speaking English and Japanese in certain countries may not have access to Facebook. We would like to remain a neutral area beneficial to every traveller who enjoys visiting Japan.
  • We will not allow posts from people asking for sponsorships for visas, or any other illegal help with immigration. If you want to know how to get documents to travel to Japan, please refer to the Japanese embassy in your home country.
  • For our members' safety, we will not allow posts looking for traveling companions or local meetups. Also use the same level of caution if you private message another member. Use common sense, and be aware that it's very difficult to know who you're talking to on the Internet. While we do our best to administer and moderate, we can not guarantee that every member will be honest or helpful.
  • We discourage our members from supporting companies that do unauthorized business - tickets, merchandise, etc. Please use common sense and spend your money with legitimate businesses.
  • We are not responsible for what members posts, and any advice is voluntarily taken at your own risk. The admins and moderators shall try and weed out misinformation and have updated info as much as possible but sometimes wrong or old info can still slip through. If you see anything requiring updating or correcting, please feel free to reply to the post or contact the forum's moderator or an administrator by PM.
  • Click outgoing URL links at your own risk. We cannot be responsible for the safety of other websites. The admins and moderators shall try and weed out suspicious links as much as possible but it's difficult to enforce, especially with shortened URLs. If you see anything requiring our attention, please feel free to contact the forum's moderator or an administrator by PM.
  • Please do not spam. The definition of spam is an irrelevant or advertising post. Any post considered spam will be removed.
  • Please do not bump posts. (bumping posts is posting a useless reply just to push a post to the top for attention) Admins and moderators may occasionally bump posts for relevancy. If you think a post should be bumped or stickied, please PM that forum's moderator explaining why you think it deserves attention. Regular members who bump posts may have their posts deleted and privileges removed. Repeat offenders may be subject to their accounts temporarily banned.
  • On the other hand, replying with a relevant link to an older post is very much encouraged and welcomed.
  • Please do not post in a random mixture of upper and lower case, since it's difficult to read and that trend became extinct after MySpace died.
  • Illegal activities and discussion thereof, such as illegal hacking, digital piracy, trespassing or use of illegal drugs, will not be tolerated, and if appropriate, may be reported to local authority.
  • Please get approval from an administrator or moderator before trying to advertise or funnel traffic to outside blogs or websites, or to do any other kind of self-promotion. We have an approved member area for such purpose. Offending posts will be deleted and unapproved spammers will be kicked out without notification.
  • If you feel like you or someone you know wishes to volunteer time to help out, please don't hesitate to contact an administrator by PM about volunteering to be a moderator of a specific forum. Everyone helping out here are unpaid, and even the server use are paid for and donated by the admins to this forum with no obligations other than that we are all fans of travelling in Japan and voluntarily donate our time and effort to helping other travellers visiting Japan.
The above rules should be quite easy to understand and follow. These are only in place to ensure our community is a fun place to be, and a comfortable atmosphere for all. The rules below are more about the technical rather than ethical and broken down into categories.

Technical Rules
Registration
  • Real names or any real information in member profiles are not enforced, but obscene names will have their accounts removed. We will randomly check for obscenities in other languages so please don't test us.
  • Random IP checks will be done. Please do not make shadow accounts to artificially boost posts or polls. Duplicate accounts may be deleted. Further infraction may cause your IP and/or a larger IP range to be banned. We will be monitoring for strange activities.
  • User names are not allowed to be changed after registration. Please make sure that is the name you want to be known.
  • User names are limited to alphanumeric (alphabet and numbers) and spaces, upper and lower case are not distinctive during login.
    (when logging in, a username like JapanTraveller, you can type japantraveller or even JAPANtraveller and it will be recognized as the same user name)
  • User names are limited to a length between 5 to 16 characters.
  • Passwords must contain at least a letter and a number, some basic symbols are allowed, upper and lower case are distinctive.
    (a password like JapanTraveller555, you must type exactly JapanTraveller555, with J and T in uppercase and the rest lower case)
  • Passwords are limited to a length between 6 to 20 characters.
User Profile
  • Personal avatars can be uploaded to our forum. The minimum size is 30 by 30px. The maximum size is 100 by 100px. Size limit is 30 kilobytes (30000 bytes).
  • We do have a small selection of pictures for use as avatars if you do not wish to upload one.
  • Please do not use obscene images or words as your avatar or username. It will be deleted and may result your account being deleted without notification.
Posting in the Forum
  • Uploaded image attachments will be embedded and displayed. Please click the Place Inline button to create the embedded link for your uploads.
  • Embedded URL links to images will be embedded and displayed.
  • The allowed maximum of attachments per post is 3.
  • Maximum size for image attachments is 1600x1200.
  • Maximum size for displayed image links is 1600x1200.
  • Attachments are not allowed in private messaging.
  • Polls are allowed, but limited to 10 entries.
  • Maximum number of poll options is set to 30
  • There is a maximum characters per post, the number is quite high and only there to prevent spambots.
Photo and Video
  • Be advised that any photos and video posted must be accompanied by text describing the scene. Photos without descriptions may be removed. We want every post to provide valuable information about traveling in Japan.
  • Please make new photo posts only in the Photo Sharing forum. In any other forum, add photos to replies and posts only if it's relevant to the conversation.
  • Try and limit selfies and photos that have limited use to other travellers to as few as possible. We're glad you enjoyed yourself, but your family photos and selfies are for you and your friends on your own Instagram/Facebook wall, not a public forum. Our storage is not unlimited and not for member's personal use.
  • Abuse of the attachment system will be punished severely, starting with their attachment upload privileges being revoked.
  • Older photos may be deleted after some time, deletion priority will go to the least relevant.
  • The allowed maximum of attachments per post is 3.
  • Maximum size for image attachments is 1600x1200.
  • Maximum size for displayed image links is 1600x1200.
  • For the moment we will only allow Youtube videos being embedded into our posts. Later we may expand that to include Vimeo and Dailymotion.
  • Please do not post more than 3 embedded videos in one post unless there is good reason. Spamming videos across multiple replies or multiple posts may result in your account being frozen or deleted. We will review violating posts and may delete without notification.
